Imagine committing to a physical challenge and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to fundraising for kids and families who need it most. You’ll register online, spread the word about your fundraiser, train and prepare for event day—all with support from your Lurie Children’s event lead.
On event day, you’ll start start your morning surrounded by dozens of others, all gathered with one goal in mind: to climb 1,643 steps, summit the Aon Center, and raise money that provides pet therapy, art programs, camp and tutoring to hospitalized children who need it most. At the top, you catch your breath—and get a view of Chicago that’s matched only by the feeling in your heart: we did this together. Later, at the post-event party, there’s laughter, snacks, music, and knowing that your day just changed lives.
Event Day
Step Up for Kids event day is filled with energy, inspiration, and the shared goal of helping kids and families at Lurie Children’s. Here’s what to expect from start to finish.

Morning Arrival & Registration
- Arrive at Chicago’s Aon Center, where friendly volunteers greet you, check you in, and distribute your event bib.
- Grab light refreshments and mingle with fellow participants. Whether you’re climbing solo or as part of a team—family, friends, or coworkers—everyone arrives buzzing with enthusiasm and a shared sense of purpose.

Pre-Climb Warm-Up & Announcements
- A motivational host leads a short warm-up and introduces key partners, hospital ambassadors, and staff from Lurie Children’s and K.I.D.S.S. for Kids.
- Brief remarks underscore the impact you’re making—funding essential familyfocused services like pet therapy, art programs, summer camp, tutoring, and more that aren’t covered by insurance.

Stair Climb Challenge Begins
- Two climb options: Full Climb (all 80 floors / 1,643 steps) or a Half Climb.
- Climbers of all ages and abilities participate—no prior training required. Pace yourself, soak in the energy, and focus on your impact.
- Volunteer “spotters” are stationed on floors along the way to cheer, guide, and offer encouragement. Many teams take photos from inside stairwells or landings to track progress and celebrate milestones.

At the Top: A Rewarding View & Celebration
- Staff and volunteers greet you with high-fives and smiles. Many take photos and commemorate your achievement with keepsakes or downloadable badges.
- Whether arriving solo or as a group, participants celebrate together with hugs, laughter, and sometimes team chants or banners.
- At the summit, take in Chicago’s skyline from the 80th floor—a stunning panoramic reward after the climb.

Post-Climb Party
- Enjoy a post-climb party complete with snacks, music, and a celebratory atmosphere. Celebrate top fundraisers and teams, hear inspirational patientstories, and thank all participants.
