About the Race

Event History

Michael Evangelides and son, Gus

Gus Evangelides lost his battle with a brain tumor just three months shy of his second birthday. His legacy inspired Run for Gus, our longstanding run supporting Lurie Children’s Brain Tumor Center.

As our community of supporters grew, so did our opportunity to help even more children. Run for Gus evolved into Lurie Children’s Race Against Cancer to bring the entire pediatric cancer community together under one flagship event.

By joining us in September, you can honor Gus and support thousands of children facing cancer.

Overview & Mission

Every family seen in Lurie Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders deserves to have cures.

Tremendous strides have been made. Almost 85% of kids survive a cancer diagnosis. But almost isn’t good enough.

Many families still face the reality that their child has no viable treatment options. Those who do survive face a lifetime of health issues due to the toxicity of existing therapies. They deserve more. Your support of Lurie Children’s Race Against Cancer helps close the gap and transform the lives of every child battling cancer or a serious blood disorder. You can make a difference by joining the Race Against Cancer and exploring all of the other ways to make a difference during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

(formerly Run for Gus)

Lurie Children’s Race Against Cancer is for families navigating treatment. For survivors finding strength. For siblings who’ve been there every step of the way. For nurses, doctors and researchers who give their all. And for everyone who has ever sat in a hospital room wishing they could do more.

Together, at the Race Against Cancer, we can push cancer back and move breakthroughs forward. And here’s the truth: we are closer than ever.

Whether you run, walk, push a stroller, cheer from the sidelines or form a team in your child’s honor, your support can help us get to the finish line.
